Does it get better?

I’ve had herpes for around five years now – the first year was hell with 1-2 outbreaks per month. I was taking an antiviral which basically seemed to have no effect. After I moved interstate I saw a different doctor who said there were other antivirals I could try, so I started taking a different antiviral suppressively.

A HUGE difference! The outbreaks cleared up in a few days and taking the new antiviral daily actually kept them at bay.

After a year of suppressive treatment I tried going without the pills as the doctor suggested (recurrences usually lessen with time anyway). But after a few days off the pills I had an outbreak. So another year of suppressive therapy with regular breaks to see how I went. Every time I stopped taking the pills I had another outbreak.

Until about another year had passed and my trial breaks from the antiviral medication didn’t result in a recurrence. So now I only take antivirals episodically, when I experience prodome or an outbreak. The only time I get an outbreak now is if I am seriously stressed, which doesn’t happen too often as I try to have a more relaxed attitude to life, love and work.

So yes, it does get better with time!
