Hi Confused
This could be a little tricky!
If you have outbreaks in the genital region and you have had them swabbed and tested with the result showing that you have HSV-1, then you can be certain that you have GH HSV-1.
If you have only had a blood test and the results showed HSV-1 antibodies this does not indicate whether it is genital or oral.
So you may, or may not, have oral herpes – and therefore you ‘could’ pass on cold sores by kissing if you do have oral herpes as well as genital herpes.
According to the AHMF, “Over 70% of Australians carry the herpes simplex 1 virus” which predominantly causes oral herpes. So odds are in your favour that the person you are kissing already has oral herpes, even if they don’t experience oral outbreaks, or have not had a cold sore since they were a child.
If you are entering into a relationship, when you discuss ‘Safer Sex’ options and your genital herpes, you can ask the other person if they have cold sores. If they have had or do experience oral cold sores, then you don’t need to worry about passing on HSV-1 by kissing them. You do need to consider genital herpes and other STIs though.
